Identify Your Headache
Most of us have experienced the annoying and sometimes very painful feeling of a headache. Some people experience migraine headaches while others might experience tension or sinus headaches. Headaches are caused by a variety of reasons, and understanding the cause may help you to better manage the pain and seek more pleasure in your life.
There are two types of headaches: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Examples of primary headaches are migraine headaches, tension headaches and cluster headaches. These types of headaches can be triggered by stress, caffeine, lack of sleep or lack of exercise. Secondary headaches are caused by underlying diseases or conditions such as tumors, inflammation, meningitis or fluid on the brain. Chronic headaches cannot be cured, but they can be controlled. There are many medications that can either stop the pain associated with headaches or stop the symptoms, like nausea, that accompany some. Using medication should only be one part of a wellness program.
Lifestyle changes, such as stress management, dietary changes, improved sleep strategies and relaxation therapy should accompany any drug plan your doctor prescribes. Depending on the patient and what type of headache he or she has, we work together with you to outline a manageable approach to help you enjoy a full and satisfying life.
