According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, surgery to remove a small portion of the brain responsible for causing seizures may help some patients with temporal lobe epilepsy live as much as five years longer than those on anti-seizure drugs.

Over the last decade, a new kind of service animal has emerged. According to the Delta Society, while there are no scientific studies to prove this theory, seizure alert dogs have the ability to warn people with epilepsy of an impending attack minutes—sometimes hours—before it occurs.

More than three million Americans, including 360,000 Floridians, are coping with epilepsy. Many people with epilepsy manage successful careers in a variety of industries. In fact, the only jobs that people with a history of seizures are prohibited from obtaining are those that require a federal commercial driver’s license or a commercial pilot’s license.
